Hey folks,
just joined this group, though I am a passionate & very active localvore. I'd like to hear from folks about the meaning of the word localvore. Why? In a recent discussion with a friend at VPR, he stated "we have to be very careful with words like this as they are largely interpretive, not yet being in the lexicon and it seems to us that the localvore movement in Vermont sees itself as being 100% local, that may change."
I looked up the definition in wikipedia, here's what I found:
The *local food movement* is a 'collaborative effort to build more locally based, self-reliant food economies - one in which sustainable food production, processing, distribution, and consumption is integrated to enhance the economic, environmental and social health of a particular place and is considered to be a part of the broader sustainability movement. It is part of the concept of local purchasing and local economies , a preference to buy locally produced goods and services. Those who prefer to eat locally grown/produced food sometimes call themselves "localvores" or locavores.
I basically agree with this definition. To me, the localvore movement is a "collaborative effort to build more locally based, self-reliant food economies." That versus the claim that my VPR friend may be right about the statement that "it seems to us that the localvore movement in Vermont sees itself as being 100% local."
If there is debate as to the definition of the word, than his statement "we have to be very careful with words like this as they are largely interpretive, not yet being in the lexicon" is definitely accurate. If this is the case, the localvore movement needs to think about more clearly defining the word and itself!
Really looking forward to feedback. Glad to be on this forum.
Sincerely,
